Logical Partitioning

Dynamic logical partitioning (LPAR) promises to revolutionize corporate IT infrastructures by enabling the capability to virtualize hardware resources that can be shared by multiple independent operating environments. This system architecture approach allows the division of a single server into several completely independent virtual servers or logical partitions. LPAR on eServer i5 is supported by the IBM i5/OS and AIX 5L operating systems, and by the Linux operating system. LPAR has re-energized server consolidation and IT cost optimization strategies, permitting consolidation of hardware, software, networks, data centers, and more importantly, skills. It offers quick consolidation of multiple workload environments, time zones, and footprints within a single or reduced number of iSeries or eServer i5 systems. Recent enhancements include micro-partitioning™ for AIX 5L, automatic CPU balancing with uncapped processor partitioning, and increase of the previous 32-partition limit to 254. Our IBM-certified system engineers use the LVT (LPAR Validation Tool) to ensure that the configuration matches the requirements for enhancing operations tasks.
