Case Study
Client: A US-based P&C Insurance Company

Challenge / Problem / Requirements: The client was using optical drives to store scanned claims and other related documents for later retrieval. Retrieval of the scanned documents on the optical technology was poor, taking 15 to 30 seconds, and was slowing the processing of claims. Additionally, backups were a challenge since backing up an optical platter was a long and cumbersome manual process. Finally, this client needed a solution that would allow them to quickly restore all of the scanned documents at the IBM Disaster Recovery Center for their yearly tests and in the event of a disaster.

Test / Benchmark: After a few meetings with the client executives and IT staff, it was obvious to them that our IBM solution was well thought out and priced effectively to solve their business problems.

Solution / Implementation: essextec proposed and implemented an IBM DR550 which packages System p, SAN disk, LTO tape, and Tivoli Storage Manager to be the repository for the data previously stored on the optical technology. MBS software was used to link IBM Content Manager to the TSM software. essextec systems engineers implemented the IBM DR550 and MBS solution and worked closely with the client to provide skills transfer on operation of the new IBM DR550. essextec’s highly experienced staff of architects and systems engineers were able to focus in on a solution for this client and provide state of the art technology to solve this client’s problems.

Benefits: Document retrieval response times dropped from 15-30 seconds to sub-second, backups were scheduled nightly using TSM software, and restoring of the data at the IBM Disaster Recovery Site was now practical.
